I have recently begun enjoying reading. A senior executive gifted me an interesting book, Infinite Vision, which details the life of Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy—affectionately known as Dr. V. Reading his story allowed me to deeply understand the massive scale of one individual’s purpose.
Every human life eventually reaches a threshold where it demands a compass. Look at Dr. V, the founder of Aravind Eye Hospital, who at the age of 58—a time when the world expects a retirement curtain call—stepped into an impossible dream to cure global blindness. Reflecting on this leaves me speechless; I am 58 too, yet my path has been different. His journey forces an essential question about human belief: How do we discern the voice that shows us where we are supposed to be heading?
For some, that voice is discovered through the distilled counsel of pious, wise human mentors who serve as earthly north stars. For others—and I relate to this deeply—that voice belongs to a living God who holds the blueprint of the future. While these paths seem distinct, they share a profound spiritual parallel. True alignment, regardless of your worldview, relies on a foundational value system that must be fiercely maintained.
The biblical book of Proverbs notes, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20). When an individual listens to a mentor known for devotion, selflessness, and deep insight, they tune into a shared human inheritance. Even without recognizing a divine source, a wise mentor shares foundational principles—integrity, sacrifice, and long-term discipline—that are woven into the very fabric of the universe.
Dr. V’s philosophy was beautifully simple: “To give sight to all and to see all as one”. Those who followed him were following a leader who was simultaneously practical and profound, moving seamlessly from strategy to spirit. In this way, relying on a wise human guide isn’t a rejection of the spiritual; it is an unconscious alignment with it. Such seekers are simply following the light reflected by a human mirror. Where the path shifts for the believer is not in the value of wisdom, but in its ultimate source. A human mentor excels at analyzing past chapters, evaluating natural talents, and offering brilliant tactical direction based on human history. But for those of us who believe in a living God operating outside the limits of time, trusting Him means believing there is a conscious, loving Author who declares, “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
God goes beyond giving direction; He gives us the internal power to walk the path with Him in faith and He guides us based on destiny—navigating us through unseen shifts and opening doors no human commercial strategy could conceive.
