Reflecting on Father’s Day: Remembrance, Gratitude, and Encouragement

Isn’t it wonderful to wake up to all the wonderful greetings, wishing us dads a happy Father’s Day! It is lovely indeed to be treated well, there is clearly so much excitement and as much as I love being a father, and receive all the attention (one day of the year!!! haha joke only!), I also have a dad and I want to wish him and thank him for being such a wonderful dad. Thanks to him, I have been moulded well, he taught me so much and I have always admired him.

A few years back, a progressive disease beginning with mild memory loss has now lead to his loss of having the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to the environment. Today, he does not respond to anyone, he has no idea on what is happening around him. Watching him is by far the hardest thing any family member or friend can contend with.

Yes, I have a dad, however, how can I tell him how much we love him and are thankful for him? This is hard, and whilst there is no way around it, the only encouragement I can always claim is “Thy Will Be Done. On Earth As It Is In Heaven”. I can always thank God for who my dad has been to me, without ceasing, and this encourages me deeply, I am at peace, I am joyful!

To some reading this, our Dad’s have gone ahead, left this earthly life and we can pause for a moment and reflect. If you have a relationship with Jesus, you surely know that God is your Dad! This is your time to reflect on all of the things that God has done for you and spend some time in prayer talking to Him about your earthly Dad He so generously gave you!

To many reading this, Father’s Day can also be an annual reminder of rejection and sadness, leading to bitterness. Some of our dads chose to leave or made a choice that forced him to be out of our lives. This could at times lead to bitterness towards our mom or someone that we think caused our dad to leave or to never be around at all. Some of us maybe blaming ourselves because we think that it was in some way our fault that our dads are not in our lives. Maybe that some of us even have bitterness towards God because we think it is His fault for taking our dads away.

  • LIFE IS SHORT! We do not know how long we have to live on this earth.
  • LIVE LIKE GOD MADE TODAY, PRAISE HIM & BE THANKFUL FOR IT, AND CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY! We can either be defeated by days like Father’s Day or we can wake up and say “today is the day which God made, I will be thankful, I will praise God, and I will live for Him!”

God has called us Dads to be encouragers, and that includes our families. Through prayer and conscious effort we can create a positive atmosphere. We dads are called to speaking out words of encouragement to our little or grown-up children when they do something well. Speaking well of others in front our children can be a massive help, as they see us honouring others, it creates a culture of integrity and respect. God says in His Word that He will β€˜never leave us or forsake us’. He has given us everything we need to overcome any work of the enemy, so we can be confident in building a better platform for our children today and, the generations to come!

We are here on this earth because God has a beautiful plan for our life! Discover it, fulfill it!
